ZDNet leads the backlash

See this blog post where a guy rounds up all the anti-iPhone articles on ZDNet blogs. There's a lot. Just to reiterate: This isn't happening because ZDNet gets ad money from Microsoft, or RIM, or Palm, or whatever. It's happening because second-rate hacks know they have to jump on the iPhone bandwagon, because it's what everyone is talking about, but they figure they can be "original" and seem less like shills if they bash it. Whatever. According to Steve Dowling the negative coverage and positive coverage are basically the same. Has something to do with sine waves and a dude named Fourier who I guess is a famous PR guy at Microsoft. Don't bust my balls on math because the last class I took was in junior year of high school, bokay? I tried to pay attention during Dowling's talk but I zoned out during the math parts and started drawing some cool new logos for Leopard and dreaming up some names for the version that will come after Leopard.

Feels a lot like 1984 (the real one not the fictional one) doesn't it?

Which is why us hardcore coding types want an SDK!!!

It is cruel in the worst way to tease us by saying there's OS X inside and then tell us we can't play with it.

It may be the greatest phone EVER, but your loyal developers have even bigger plans...

ZDNet leads the backlash...yes indeedy, starting off by doing a pathetic job of bashing Leopard with nonsense like(I paraphrase) "Cupertino start your photocopiers" and "Leopard looks like Vista".

FSJ, I think you will also find it interesting that a .NET developer states that Cocoa is easier to use in many ways and also points out that Mary Jo Foley should research her material better before publishing things just to attract clicks.

Some support among the backlash.

Actually, the link to the thoughts of a .NET developer towards Cocoa is this one.

Sorry about the double post.

Holy Crap Batman!

FSJ is starting to sound like a GEEK. Sine wave? WTF? I'm sooooooo proud of you man.

Note that one of ZDNet's major investors is Vulcan Ventures. It should come as no surprise that Vulcan Ventures is the personal venture capital company of uber-rich Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

"Another way to look at it is to view all media coverage like a sine wave, where stories above the horizon and below the horizon ("positive" and "negative") are virtually the same thing, and the only value worth measuring is the volume of the curve and its amplitude from zero, regardless of whether it's positive or negative."

You are talking about the area under the curve. If you integrate a sine wave over one period, then your area is 0 because you have as much "positive" area as "negative" area. I think for Apple, the net area is positive, so trouble your brain, FSJ.

That guy makes some sound observations about ZDNet, whoever or whatever ZDNet is. They obviously suck ass. I, as I hope most people would, will wait until a month after the release of the iPhone and see what intelligent reviews are available, and I anticipate thousands, and I will promptly purchase a $500 iPhone (or not) based on real information.

I suppose Apple eats it both ways by creating the tension around a new and potentially revolutionary product by announcing it too soon. You know what they say FSJ, there is no such thing as bad press…

(fake)Steve,
Don't be upset, we love the iPhone really, its just we have worked out the as soon as you mention "iPhone" in any article or blog post, you get a little extra site traffic, and publishers like traffic, not because they are nice people but because they click ads!

Even my tiny little blog had a go at 'iPhone-bashing' (http://theblogof.rosscbrown.co.uk/2007/06/i-swear-i%e2%80%99m-not-jealous-of-that-iphone-thingy/).

Don't be mad Steve, take it as a compliment. We love you really!

That ZD post you linked to was good. The backlash begins against the backlash!!!

The best irony is all the complaints about the hype by the people behind the hype. Like a couple of demos and a few straightforward (dare I say low key?) ads constitute hype. (It's not like you had a runner throwing a hammer into the phone company, setting off explosions.)

Awww the media culture. I think they're annoyed to be taken away from Paris Hilton.

Ocelot.

You totally need to call the next version of OS X Ocelot.

That's what I've been calling Leopard for the past several months. Does a great job of throwing my IT guys for a loop - especially now that I've been saying it for so long they've started using it themselves without noticing.

Halsey Minor founded CNET in 1992 with $5 million in venture capital from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Intel owns a 5 percent stake in the company. Minor's aspired to develop a cable network devoted to computers and new technology, with a companion project on the Internet. In April 1995 it launched a weekly half-hour program on the USA Network, and cnet.com, featuring news, product reviews and helpful tips. Today CNET has several Internet sites devoted to topics ranging from computer and technology news to web design, from online gaming to downloadable software, including the web sites ZDNet and Computer Shopper, as well as CNET Download.com

It amuses me how anyone can bash a product they've never used.

Speaking of bashing without trying, how about this headline in the Sydney Morning Herald: "Don't bother with Apple TV: After much deliberation, I'm convinced the Apple TV is the most useless, over-priced technology product released this year. And I'm able to reach that conclusion without even testing one out. Yes - it's that bad."

FSJ- I love your coverage of the press. You do such a great job combining actual knowledge of the media (like the bit awhile back--I think involving Carl Icahn and Ed Zander--about unattributed sources) with the public perception of the media that you've got to have a serious news background.

The predicted backlash seems to be coming along nicely> i am puzzled by Apple FSJ. What is the cause of thhis sudden backlash? Is it because Apple is seen as a end consumer-centric business while most IT firms still depend on B2B for their revenue?

Or maybe its because Apple has managed a really wonderful thing. They started out talking about information democracy but now they dont have to. Apple has managed to sell cool as an actual product. You have to love that though, I mean cool as a product. genius.

Maybe John Lilly, Mozilla's COO, is a bit weak on maths, too. Daniel Eran at Roughly Drafted points out today that the offending pie-chart doesn't have to be representing the complete browser market, but merely Apple's projected share of it plus Microsoft's projected share of it. The total for that can be smaller than the total browser market. Daniel adds that Lilly is being rash, sensationalist, and fearful on the basis of a single misunderstood slide. Apple doesn't want Mozilla's lunch money. Mozilla is actually useful to Apple. And when Jobs intends to go after someone he's not shy of saying so directly:

"... Jobs announced the unveiling of a new WebObjects-based Apple Store ... by displaying a photo of Michael Dell with a bullseye target on his head, saying “we're coming after you, buddy!”

Only if it expands significantly on Safari 3, and then it should be called Tabby.
