I'm traveling today but just heard from folks in Cupertino that we've been served with an official complaint from the Free Software Foundation regarding the iPhone. We're not entirely surprised since as I recently reported (see here) Peter Brown, director of FSF, was sending around email dropping veiled hints about how the iPhone uses software that is covered under the GPL.
According to our legal team the complaint was prepared by lawyers from the Software Freedom Law Center. Gist of the complaint is that crucial pieces of OS X and Safari were originally designed by Richard Stallman or designed by others who turned over their copyrights to Stallman. The threat is that we must remove those pieces of code and redesign the iPhone or start paying a royalty to the Free Software Foundation equivalent to 100% of the retail price of each unit sold. Or we can agree to comply with the terms of the GPL and give away all our software. But they say they'd mostly like us to go with option 2, that being the money.
More on this as it develops ...

Aaaand some more people trying to cash in on the iPhone.
Emad =P
All these losers trying to get attention from the iPhone hype are pissing me off. Apple contributes a lot back to open source (and "free") software projects.
Richard Stallman is a nutcase.
Frigging fREETARD
Is he wearing a hat or is his head glued to the wall? And if the latter, why is he smiling?
I never understood why people want to pay 2x the price for computers that do the same thing than my cheapo Dell, except the they are not compatible with 90% of the other computers in the world. But then again, I know how to use a real computer so maybe I'm just not in the target group? Anyways Fake Steve, you rule!
Better watch out - Dickie may have his bosom chum Hugo Chavez "Bolivarize" you!
Doesn't make much sense. If that is so, then Apple has to pay royalties for Mac OS X as well ?!
Software should be free. Great idea.
Next lets feed the starving African masses with sunshine & good vibes.
That's not a hat, it's a halo.
is that Jesus? I mean with the halo and the hippy look...
amen
- fake apple fanboi
Fuck you FSJ
You may want to use this stirring rendition of Stallman "singing" the freetard anthem as a ringtone.
"I never understood why people want to pay 2x the price for computers that do the same thing than my cheapo Dell, except the they are not compatible with 90% of the other computers in the world. But then again, I know how to use a real computer so maybe I'm just not in the target group?"
I never understood why Visual Studio 6.0 that helps make "real apps" and runs on "real computers" crashes AND corrupts my workspaces each time I accidentally open more than one workspace at once.
I never understood why my "real" OS (Vista) copied the "crappy" OS (OS X) that is not compatible with 90% of the computers in the world.
kimmo, I just read your comment twice, and although it seems to be in English, it's not the kind of English that rational, sensible people understand.
Except for the last sentence anyway.
The man is brilliant. Obviously.
kimmo: Same reason people buy cars even when the much cheaper public transportation will take them anywhere they need to be. Or why people generally would rather pay more to see a movie in a nice theater than watch a bootlegged version on a cheap 15 inch TV even though that TV it's the same movie.
As for RMS, does anyone take that 40-year-old virgin seriously anymore besides the other virgins who use Linux?
Send him a free t-shirt and a 20%-OFF iPhone coupon. I think they should be happy with that.
Is there an article about this anywhere?
To all the blogtards thinking this is real news, what part of Fake Steve Jobs do you not understand?
Yes, my sheep, keep reading this blog and selling Apple stock so the price goes down and I can buy more of it and reap the rewards when the iPhone sales numbers come out. Brilliant!
0) create something (that may restore a sense of childlike wonder to everyday life)
1) give it to freetards
2) let them set the rules
That's "freedom" in their retarded minds.
actually Kimmo, youre wrong in all your points. Theyre not incompatible, they dont cost twice as much and given that you dont know these things im inclined to think that you dont know how to use computers as well as you think. You ARE part of the target group, you just don't concider yourself part of it because youve convinced yourself that computers don't make you any more or less cool.
go figure.
you rule!
What a flattering photo. He has a halo that reminds me of medieval fresco murals except it isn't gilded--yet. But after all, he is the messiah of open source eh? Now tell me you didn't do that on purpose you sly dog!
"Vaya con dios" as the Armenians say.
I've been studying Chinese history a bit while I'm here...
Let a thousand GPLs bloom!
Stallman needs a shave and to hit the treadmill.
God, is he an eyesore.
"Now tell me you didn't do that on purpose you sly dog!"
He didn't. FSJ's obviously used a stock photo of Stallman. Stallman sometimes likes to dress up as a character he calls Saint Ignucius, "a saint in the Church of Emacs".
On Stallman's site he says:
"Sainthood in the Church of Emacs requires living a life of purity ... Being holy in our church means installing a wholly free operating system ... and not putting any non-free software on your computer."
I suppose Stallman concluded that it was better to get the satire in first himself. The surprising thing is that he should be sufficiently self-aware to see the parallel yet still be unaware enough not to see there's something a little creepy about the "free software movement" and it's caught rather well in what Stallman himself says there.
Hey FSJ fans,
Don't get your hate on kimmo. What he means by a real computer is an abbacus with "Dell" written on it with a magic marker.
(Hint, he is from Sweden, a barrio town in the Tiny Republic of Togo.)
Peace out.
Many names are based on the job someone did in olden times. For example someone named Butcher probably had ancestors who were butchers and someone named Smith most likely had ancestors who worked metal. In Stallman's case I think his predecessors worked in horse stalls shoveling shit. His forefathers would be proud to see that he carries on the tradition.
Kimmo, if you know how to use a real computer, why are you still using a Dell? At least being from Sweden, you are closer to Dells customer service department in Pashtar province.
pfffsssst.
three words, fsj: call his bluff.
here's a little thing most people don't know. most legal eagles send you a "letter" when they don't have an actual case they know they can win in court. sick the apple legal team on them like the rabid, under-fed rottweilers they are, and post katie cotton in the tower with the rifle and laser site and orders to terminate with extreme prejudice. as hunter and i keep telling you: don't take any guff from these swine!!
Hey Mike who said: "He didn't. "
To my: "Now tell me you didn't do that on purpose you sly dog!"
I obviously meant that FSJ picked that particular photo for a reason--not that he took it himself. If you missed that, how come you didn't question my Armenian--maybe I miss spelled the phrase...or something...maybe it was Uzbeki instead mabe?
"Sainthood in the Church of Emacs requires living a life of purity ... Being holy in our church means installing a wholly free operating system ... and not putting any non-free software on your computer."
So while your there lets all have free computers as well !! Classic mental case, call 911.
"Sainthood in the Church of Edsel requires living a life of purity ... Being holy in our church means installing a wholly free steering wheel ... and not putting any non-free petrol in your car."
"Sainthood in the Church of Enema requires living a life of purity ... Being holy in our church means installing a wholly free arsehole ... and not putting any non-free objects up your bum."
