In case you're wondering, yes, someone got fired for this

Much love to the many readers who have sent in links to this article and the photo above which shows an iPhone kiosk running Windows XP. We called AT&T to complain and they said if we wanted to come in and install free iMacs in all their stores they'd be happy to oblige, but otherwise STFU because nobody in their IT department knows how to deal with those crazy strange foreign Macintoshes with their wacky non-Windows operating system which is just so strange and different and difficult to understand. And then we'll have to train all their people and then we'll have to find a company that will license OS X and make Mac clones because AT&T has a policy of not buying anything that has only a single source of supply. Well, we're thinking about it. That's all I can say at this time.

So who got fired? I'm sure you want to know. Well, it was a guy named Pete Dorn, who works in our supply chain organization at Apple. No, he didn't have anything to do with the Apple stores. But somebody had to be fired. We pulled his name from a hat.

Well, Sell them Macs with OS X and then sell Windows Vista on top of it (with a good profit margin and running in bootcamp or something), more money for you!

By the way, ain't OS from 2 differents sources (Apple and UNIX), while not Windows?

Hey Steve,

Word from my spy in Tucson is that iPhones are cratering all over down there.

Seems, according to the spy, that when temperatures reach 95 degrees (we're talking Fahrenheit here), which it does in the Summer (and Spring, and Fall, and sometimes even in the Winter) in Tucson, and you whip out your iPhone to brows for some nice air conditioned hideaway, one touch to the screen and the whole thing goes out.

This is a lot worse than a stuck pixel, or three.

So where are you on this?

P.S. You might already be aware of this problem, given that in the picture for this blog entry, right next to the iPhone display, is a honking big thermostat!

Hey, el Jobso, what about the handheld checkout devices now that you've removed the Mac "soft cash registers"? Any chance those are running embedded Windows ... ?

Hmm, do ya' think that opening up the native interface on an iPhone could let you replace those devices? Naw, who'd want to run an app at native speed when you can make it run so slow in Safari you can see it draw the pixels ... :)

Well, I don't think that Apple has anything to do with this. I'm sure that Apple just gave AT&T the demo video and a pile of iPhones and At&T just used what they wanted.

Besides, it's not like the iPhone needs a demo video anyway; it's so easy to use.

You might want to pull another name out of the hat, since it's happened more than once. See, for example, this shot at another AT&T store. That one didn't even make it to Windows; it just stayed hung on the initial boot screen, and none of the AT&T drones showed the slightest interest in trying to fix it.

And yes, I used the kiosk's demo iPhone to take the picture and mail it to myself. Sorry. Maybe someone else needs to be fired for the software being allowed to take and mail those kinds of pictures.

Quote:"not buying anything that has only a single source of supply".

But! isnt Windows from 1 single source of supply?

Ehh...Alcatel-Lucent? Not just single source, but used to be part of the company! AT&T only buys from other sources to keep a modicum of pricing pressure on their "preferred" vendors.

He means the Apple machines can only be bought directly from Apple, but machines running Windows can be bought almost everywhere. Also, the Windows OS can be purchased on many online stores.

Single source of supply means only via Apple stores whereas you can buy Microsoft and PC products virtually everywhere.

That would be a Dell behind it all... a broken one... and here's a shot to prove it.
