Big story on Page One of the Wall Street Journal today about EMC's ex-jock salestards harassing women by making dirty jokes and taking clients to strip bars. See here. The piece is done in the prissy finger-wagging tut-tut scolding style that has become a Journal trademark. Locker-room antics? Sales representatives going to strip clubs? My goodness. Surely not the sort of establishments that an American businessman should frequent.
But there's something weird about the story and that's the timing. Why now? The lawsuit they're mainly reporting on was filed in 2004, in Chicago. Yes, they try to make it seem timely by saying that there's a hearing scheduled for Sept. 17. But come on. That's just the Journal's way of trying to put a "why now?" somewhere near the top of the story. (It's in the fifth paragraph, before the jump.)
So let's think about how this story ended up in the paper today. Somehow some intrepid reporter just happened to be combing through court records in Chicago and came across this lawsuit? Um, maybe.
Forgive me for being cynical, but let's pursue a different possibility. Let's say you're the lawyer who's representing some women who used to work at EMC and who think they weren't paid enough. And you notice that EMC has really bounced back and is doing well these days, and by golly they just got even richer thanks to that VMware IPO. Maybe you figure they've got loads of money right now and the one thing they really don't want would be some bad publicity with juicy embarrassing details about strip clubs and boy-boy sales guys telling raunchy jokes and behaving like glorified car salesmen -- just the kind of image that EMC has been trying to shed in the past few years as they've (supposedly) moved away from twisting arms and slamming ever big hardware boxes into customer sites and into the touchy-feely business of consulting around "information lifecycle management."
So maybe you press for a ridiculously large settlement and when EMC balks you race to the Wall Street Journal and feed them a big Page One story about the moronic, sexual harassing, former B.C. hockey players who now work as salestards at EMC and spend huge amounts of money taking clients to strip clubs and hiring strippers for parties where someone licked whip cream off some young lady's boobs and oh my goodness can you believe a sales guy would behave like that?
Let me ask you something. Have you ever worked in a company? Have you ever known a sales guy? Are you shocked to find out that they tell dirty jokes and go to strip clubs? Do you think the guy who wrote this article for the Journal has ever met any of the guys who sells ads for the Journal? Do you think maybe newspaper ad sales reps ever partake of alcoholic beverages in the presence of scantily clad women? Ahem.
Okay. Enough. For what it's worth, the story does contain some marvelous flackery by EMC's pitbull spokesman, Mark Fredrickson, including, way down in the story, the following gem:
At a 2006 annual sales meeting at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, three scantily clothed showgirls came out on stage, turned around and bent over to show the initials EMC painted on their rear ends, says a former employee ... Mr. Fredrickson says the initials EMC were on the showgirls' thighs, not their derrières.
Glad he cleared that up.

So tell us FSJ, how long does it take for the lawyers in Armonk to review your posts? After that, they go to Forbes for an additional scrubbing. And a couple of days later we get stuff like this EMC howler.

hahaha, you don't believe it. Good thing my friend's dad is the head of sales. How could you NOT believe it?
They have a kid in marketing who is a total creep who was caught watching girls sleep back in college. Been in the news for his "presonal branding" website. WHICH IS HILARIOUS. Besides, he just plagiarizes everything. Can't wait till he gets caught. Scumbag.
Just contacted my contacted (while typing this) at EMC, all Execs are behind closed doors right now. Pretty fun. DANCE PUPPETS! DANCE!
Is that Jerry Stiller in the photo? Love that guy, especially as Arthur on King of Queens.
Great SNL skit of Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn as Cat Toy Salesmen, pretty much sums up the profession.

So how is this entry relevant to Apple and you personally? Do they all use iPhones, or what?
Stick to your area of expertise, El Jobso, unless sexual discrimination is, in fact, your strong point.
Who's at fault, the drug dealers (salesmen), or their customers? If the horny guys at companies that buy EMC's products didn't accept the invitation to the muff palace, then EMC wouldn't do it.
Seems to me that all the HR heads (usually women) of major companies that buy EMC's products should have a word with their managers who purchase from EMC.
Isn't EMC the same company that bought out Dantz, maker of Retrospect, the backup software that everyone loves to hate?
Maybe they should spend less time at the strip joint and more time working on an update for Retrospect.
Oh wait, Time Machine in Leopard will kill it dead. Yeah, I know that TM doesn't have all the features of Retroprick, but at least it will probably work.
This had me falling off my chair laughing so hard. Keep it up
!
Where you been man? Retrospect has been dead for years in the mac market. I bought hundreds of licenses for that piece of crap for my company. I'm still pissed that I was never taken out to the "muff palace" to consumate the deal. Dantz should follow the Apple lead and rebate the whole purchase price for Retrospect.
Hate to burst your bubble fake steve, but the hearing concerns a motion to determine whether to certify the action as a class action. This is a very important hearing that will impact the firm's bottom line. The argument that the hearing is only a pretext fails.
Thanks, PJ.
My brother-in-law is a middle management pharmaceutical sales rep/manager.
I can't look him in the eyes.
For the past seven years I've had to really concentrate on not saying 'So what is the going rate for whores in Hawaii?' and 'Could you explain the difference between your job and a pimp's?'
His mother loves him though.
Interesting story/theory...
What is WSJ's angle/benefit in reporting this now? Why would they give in to the plaintiff's lawyers wanting to plant this story?
BTW: I loved the 'expose' on the Carl Icahn vs. Moto/Zander fight in WSJ. Some may simply call it connecting the dots, I am too lazy (I mean busy) for that.
We really need to see the goo below some of the polished journo 'framed' stories. Thanks for it FSJ!
One quote which IMHO well summed up the tone of the linked WSJ news article was from Kelly Harman - formerly of Women in Technology. She described the sales room in the following terms... "It used to be a very testosterone-laden environment". Translated I guess that just means "competitive" but with a male-is-bad sleaze factor added. Then she said "You've had a bunch of white guys running around selling technology." and "running around" implies ineffectual plus the racist bit i.e. it would have been a whole lot better if it was say "black guys running round" or perhaps "black women walking around". Anyway let's just be glad they were at least selling the stuff they were paid to.
I mean what kind of bigot/idiot is this Kelly Harman that the WSJ is quoting.
Also she adds that some of them in the sales team said "'We won't change just to make you comfortable.'" and the moral tone implies that they SHOULD have changed just to make people more comfortable. But hang on... reality check... is comfort a relevant factor in a sales department? Surely it's the norm (and rightly so) that all salespeople are under pressure (both company and peer) - TO MAKE SALES or get out!
The whole damn news article is written in the same prejudiced style of accusation and innuendo with very few actual facts to help the reader decide whether a) this is a case of real discrimination or else b) sour ex-employees looking for a payout and a newspaper spreading sleaze.
Thanks for the link FSJ. Your blog's great.
If Britney Spears can walk around in underwear, high heel boots and sing like crap for all our pre-teen girls to see FREE ON PRIMETIME TV? why are these middleged women complaining about men being men??? take a big gulp of SHUT THE PHUCK UP!.
they are money hungry sales whores right? no wonder they're coming after EMC...they're just pissed they missed quota and got fired..when you make 200k a year....take it or leave it..NO SYMPATHY FOR THESE SALESWOMEN. Get a career not a lawyer.
It all starts with the head of Sales at EMC - it's not Hauck (who is mentioned in the WSJ article) - Bill Scannell is a JERK; intimadates people and doesn't give a crap about the folks who drive revenue at EMC unless of course it is his family members or those 'boys' who have been around kissing his ass. EMC is so much about adding family members to the payroll - it's a joke! The nepotism is rampant. The EMC DNA is ridiculous. Strip clubs are still very much a part of the selling cycle - the expense re-imbursements are hidden in other line items. The stock has had a nice run - should be at $23-$25 but NOT with Scannell and current sales teams leading the way. Get rid of those idiots and the stock will do fine as will all employees - men and women!
