Regarding these allegations about "cracking" MacBook cases

We keep seeing stories like this where people complain about cracking MacBook cases. Simple fix. Stop hitting shit with your MacBook, you numbskulls. Bokay? Jesus. And then these people bring these machines in to the store expecting us to replace them. Siooma, people. Learn to take better care of your stuff.

Funny, I just went to the Apple Store with this problem (and also a screen flickering problem, which is also well documented).

And they agreed to replace the MacBook.

Of course, this was also after having to had to fix the:

1. Moo-ing fan
2. Dirty palm rest
3. Spontaneous shutdowns, and
4. Faulty battery

over the course of the last 1.5 years. SJ, I still love the MacBook, but you did a shit job with quality control ;-p

They replaced my keyboard shell a year ago for this - it's now just happened again...I guess I'll be heading to see the geniuses again!

I feel their pain. I have a year-old macbook that's showing hairline cracks along the casing. They're near the upper edge of the bottom casing, concentrated around screws. I haven't taken this thing apart, and I don't bang it around, but it sure is disconcerting to see them.

I've got a crack exactly like that. There are a couple of little ridges at the top of the display, and I'd guess that some pressure from carrying the MacBook around in my pack caused it. A bit of scotch tape is holding it together. Annoying, but not that big of a deal.

Now my Sony Vaio, on the other hand.... that was bad enough to drive me over to the Light Side. Thank you, Sony. And thank you Fake Steve, for providing me with a reason to upgrade my MacBook -- I've been trying to find a good excuse.

Yeah you tell em FSJ! It's like all those MILLIONS of owners of G3 and G4 iBooks that somehow abused theirs into premature LogicBoard failures, LCD flameout's, discoloring palm wrest areas and those pesky failed AC/DC power ports JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE WANT TO PLUG THEM IN TO RECHARGE!! How dare they!!

I don't even want to get into all those abusive G3 PowerBook, G4 TiBook (chip - crack - peal), G4 AlumiBooks and now them MacIntel MacBook Pro owners! Hesus Christ, maybe Apple should only sell portable to those who'll never take them out of the box! Right Stevie??

Last iBook that Apple rolled out still working fine! Only problem is a missing foot, but Steve-O, this thing goes with me every Monday-Friday, and never has it seen an issue. Rock on.

I've had my blackbook since April, and bits of the edge on the right hand side flaked off months ago, just like in the picture. Seriously, though, are these getting fixed? I thought it was my fault. It never even leaves my desk, though (my battery has only 8 cycles on it, it's definitely not from moving it around).

Man o man. This is why I have a Powerbook. This thing looks brand new and it's 3 years old. The battery has lost a lot of its charge - lasts a piddly 1 - 2 hours now. But man, the thing is in perfect condition otherwise.

You gotta get a laptop made out of metal, not plastic, dimwits. It's worth the extra cash.

fuck it. i've decided that i just need to buy a new kit each year to preclude manufacturing flaw-based failure.

is this a bad thing?

my 12" powerbook is fine. don't know what these people are complaining about. and it's been my primary computer for 3 years.

I work at a major educational reseller, and the funny thing is, the kids that bring me cracked MacBooks usually pull them out of tattered JanSport bags crammed with textbooks.

If you're too cheap to buy a sleeve, wrap it in a sweatshirt. Cumbersome? Yes. But now there's a layer of squish between your $1000 notebook and 20 pounds of textbook.

If you just want to abuse your computer, get a toughbook.

really true about ibooks. much worse story. however if you notice not much of shit ever happened with powerbooks or macbookpros!

Lee said...

No joke, but about 80% of MacBooks (Maybe about 20) I have seen have had this problem.

Luckily mine was replaced, and I have told every other person to get theirs fixed, for free, too.

Wow, I have a 4 years old ibook g4 and never ever had single problem. I have many friends owning MB's and never heard of problems like this.

So, I suppose QC is far from being perfect at apple, but you should see how things are going to acer, sony or wherever else before complaining. And whatever you'll say, plastic doesn't break up itself.

One more thing for all users mooing about dirty: Jesus boys, you bought a WHITE device!! WTF did you expect?? You really make me sick, like all that frigtards complaining about scratches on their ipods: if you want a perfect, shiny, new device, don't use it, just buy it and keep it in it's original box. If you use it it'll look as it's been used.

my macbook's a year old and its been a-okay. thank god.
i should remember not to get so rough on it. wouldn't want the same problem! :]

SteveO,

I guess is was meant to happen sooner or later.

The masses of idiots coming to the cool side that want shit for free and break their shit so they can get new units.

It is typical in our society today.

People don't take care of their shit and then expect a new unit when they break it because of misuse.

Welcome to the social I suppose?

Frigtard losers...

dude

Anonymous said...

This is so true.

I've had customers bring in units that were obviously abused, but they'll lie through their teeth and deny it all day long.

The way people treat their laptops boggles my mind. Then they expect the world when they drop/kick/sit on their shit and it breaks.

Look people, there's nothing in the manufacturer warranty about being a dumbass. Maybe next time you bitch about how expensive something is you'll treat it better.

I have a MacBook, about a yr and a half old, that has a cracked casing. I do NOT abuse this computer. It lives on a bed and an easy chair. Nothing has hit it, it's just the plastic breaking.

I had this issue, they went as far as to ask my if I had a cat that sat on my closed macbook. It seems that the top of the screen, on latitude with the camera has two small ridges. With the magnetic closure pulling these ridges into the palmrest cracks can happen. After apple replaced my palmrest and keyboard parts I have began putting about 5 post it notes over the i sight camera to keep the space between the lid and the keyboard when it is closed. It has not happened since. I was rather disappointed that the plastic is so fragile the I have to treat it like glass. I baby my macbook anyway, it goes in the incase neoprene sleeve (which I used a seam ripper so the inside label of the sleeve wouldn't scratch my macbook). Once in the sleeve, it goes in a targus backpack.

Ironically the last thing I did, before I noticed the crack...carried it in the backpack with a textbook. I think there is certainly something to the cracking being caused by weight pressing in on the case.

Hopefully the next gen aluminum macbook wont be so dainty.

My five-year-old G4 PowerBook still looks brand new.

I had one of those a few months ago. I brought it in to the Apple Store; the Genius told me that it's caused by slamming the screen down or putting pressure on the top, and that they'd fix it for free by replacing the affected panel, but if I wanted to avoid it in the future I should be a little more gentle with the screen. Got my MacBook back a few days later, and bought a backpack with a padded laptop pocket so it wouldn't happen again. No problem at all, except that I had to use my sister's computer for a few days.

I don't know why people complain about these sorts of issues when Apple will cheerfully fix them. Everybody makes mistakes, even large corporations; all I ask is that they take responsibility, and Apple usually does.

Hey, here's a thought for people who are saying everyone should take better care of their macbook.

If every macbook in the goddamn world has the exact same inch and a half of plastic coming off the same 3 places, it's clearly more than being a bit rough with it.
