Suddenly Fortune has a raging hard-on for Apple

Now they're running some big pile of FUD based on a Forrester report listing the top 10 reasons why corporate IT shops won't support iPhone. See here. It's just a straight-up bash job and totally overlooks the fact that in terms of how technology gets adopted the world has been turned upside down. Used to be technology started with enterprises and then trickled out to consumers. Today it's the opposite. Consumers get the good stuff first, and then enterprises have to race to catch up. We'll get into enterprises. Wait and see. Even if we don't, who gives a shit? It's not like we're having trouble selling these things. Hell, we can't make them fast enough. Peace out, Fortune. And keep up the good work of attacking Apple for no good reason. You bitter old freaks.

That's the reason you won't. The problem is not that Business hates Apple, the problem is Apple won't put in the effort to give Business the complementary reach-around that Microsoft, HP, Dell, Blackberry, et.al do.

Fortune needs to learn that there are a lot of businesses out there that are not big business and can use the iPhone as is.

And then the CEO buys one on a whim, and suddenly the IT dept unofficially supports it. Funny how that happens.

The comments are great. I love the one about color choices.

Active Sync, have you heard of it?
Why in God's name is this NOT available yet?

One point in the Fortune article isn't FUD: the lack of a user-replaceable battery. The battery game with Apple, especially on a mission critical device like a phone, is a disgrace.

I think Apple should buy Fortune.

The most successful companies takes risks and try new things. Smart Big companies will use the iPhone for business.

McCaw: you have a point, but you exaggerate its significance.

iPhone battery life is great, much better than WinMobile and even Nokia 3G phones.

Given the long battery life, it's unlikely that even an enterprise user is not (a) near a power outlet, (b) in car, or (c) near a USB port before the battery runs out.

Seriously.

Using the battery as an excuse not to buy an iPhone is right up there with waiting for 3G. There are lame excuses that lets one rationalize what is ultimately an emotional decision.

I don't mean to be a dick, but RSJ (and even FSJ) are too classy to bring this up so I'm just going to say it:

The iPhone is not for poor people. If you really give a rusty fuck about spending $whatever for an instant replacement, then you aren't in the target market. Feel free to take your shitty little Verizon phone and cram it in your over-sized orange parka with a hundred replacement batteries and jerk off to the experience. The rest of us will enjoy having a phone that doesn't work like ass and if we have to pay a few extra bucks for the privilege... well, whatever.

Like the poopy one, I don't see the battery issue as being terribly important. The ability to recharge through a USB port is significant. If you travel with a laptop, you should be okay.

Also, I haven't noticed battery drainage to be a huge problem unless you spend 2 hours straight watching YouTube videos (and I have, a couple of times, God help me). The auto-sleep function helps a lot.

Also, Energizer makes a compact recharger (for iPod, but of course, the iPhone interface is the same) that runs on a couple of AAs.
